New Mexico is an energy-producing state, with significant carbon-based fossil energy resources that are currently the mainstay of the state’s energy economy. Compared to the other lower 48 states, New Mexico is fourth in production of natural gas, third in coal reserves and fifth in the production of crude oil. New Mexico also has vast renewable energy resources, ranking second in solar, and twelfth in wind energy.

As growing pressure on once-abundant fossil fuel resources continues to mount, and the need to reduce carbon emissions and our nation’s dependence on overseas sources of energy become urgent, clean, renewable sources must be brought mainstream. The New Mexico Clean Energy Update explores what’s being done to make this happen.

The New Mexico Clean Energy Update is produced by Vision Trust, Inc., a non-profit, tax-exempt organization founded to develop educational and public interest programs. Program support is provided by the New Mexico Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources Department, Energy Conservation and Management Division.
